Market-moving stories can spread faster than verification. Start by identifying the original source, its publication timestamp, timezone and whether the item is a primary document, direct reporting, commentary or social-media repetition. A headline reposted by several aggregators is not several independent confirmations.
A reliable event card records: (1) what is confirmed; (2) where the statement originated; (3) publication and event times; (4) which facts remain uncertain; (5) relevant instruments; and (6) what would falsify the initial interpretation. For official economic releases, the statistical agency's document is preferable to an unattributed screenshot.
Example workflow: A hypothetical central bank announces a rate change. Read the official decision and statement first, then confirm the timestamp. Only afterward compare bond yields, foreign exchange and broad equity benchmarks in clearly specified windows. Do not claim that a move was caused by the announcement unless competing news and pricing context are considered.
News-feed quality: An API's 'last refreshed' time is different from the article's original publication time. Publishers may revise stories; preserve updated timestamps. Paywalled text cannot be freely copied into your own course or dashboard without permission.
Exercise: Select a real, publicly accessible economic release from a statistical agency. Create an event card with direct source link, local and UTC timestamps, three verified facts and two open questions.
